What "no value" actually means

Why we haul cars for free
This is the question we get most often. If the car has no value, why would we come get it for free? Are we going to add a fee later?
No. We make our money on the scrap metal. Even a stripped shell has two to four thousand pounds of steel in it. Steel scrap in NC is running around $0.05 to $0.08 per pound right now. A 2,000 pound shell at $0.06 is $120 at the scrap yard. We spend $30 to $50 in gas and an hour of a driver's time getting it. The difference is our profit. It is not a big profit, but it is enough that we do not need to charge you.
The math changes if the car is in a hard spot. If we have to bring a winch to drag it 200 feet out of the woods, or hire a separate loader to get it onto the truck, we might charge a small fee or pass. The hidden fee problem and why we don't do it
You have probably seen the ads. "Free junk car removal, $200 cash for your car!" Then the tow truck shows up and the driver tells you the car is only worth $50, or that towing is $150, or that there is a "processing fee." Suddenly you owe money or you get a fraction of what was promised.
We do not run that play. If we tell you free, it is free. If we tell you a cash number on the phone, that is the number you get at pickup, not a starting point for negotiation. The reason is simple. Stripped body shells, the ones we just talked about. Cars with blown engines that have been sitting so long the tires are flat and the body is rusted through. Cars that failed inspection and the owner does not want to fix them, especially if the car is an older model with low scrap value. Cars left behind by a previous owner or tenant. Cars that have been in a flood and are not worth repairing. Cars that have been in a wreck and the insurance company will not total them but the repair cost is more than the car is worth.
The common thread is that these cars are not worth enough for us to pay cash for them, but they still have enough metal for us to make a small margin hauling them. If your car falls into any of these, free removal is the right fit.
What we cannot take for free
There are a few situations where free removal does not work.
If the car is so buried that we need special equipment to get it out, we may have to charge or pass. A car that has been crushed into a cube, a car that is wedged between two buildings, a car that is sunk into the mud up to the axles. These are not impossible, but they are not free either.
If the car is actually a van or a box truck loaded with garbage or hazardous waste, we cannot take it. We take vehicles, not dump loads. You would need a junk removal service for that.
If there is no title and no way to establish ownership (no registration, no insurance card, no bill of sale), we are limited in what we can do legally.
